How Meta take advantage of AI in advertising
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced during the company's first-quarter earnings call that they plan to introduce AI agents to billions of people through their apps. Zuckerberg believes that these AI tools will be useful and meaningful for everyone from regular users to businesses. Although he did not give a detailed preview of how Meta plans to add generative AI to its apps, he mentioned exploring chat experiences in WhatsApp and Messenger, visual creation tools for posts in Facebook and Instagram, and ads.
According to Zuckerberg, Meta is exploring the development of generative AI products that could speed up WhatsApp's nascent customer support business, allowing tens of millions of AI agents to engage in chat on behalf of businesses. Meta will also extend the use of AI agents to the metaverse, where people will easily create avatars, objects, worlds, and code to tie everything together.
Meta initially lagged in building its AI infrastructure as the company rebranded and focused on the metaverse. However, the company has spent billions of dollars on rehauling its data centers in recent quarters, and Zuckerberg claims that Meta is no longer behind in building its AI infrastructure. He hinted that generative AI products would be released in the coming months.
Meta is not the only company racing to build competing applications for generative AI. The unprecedented success of OpenAI's ChatGPT has made generative AI the tech trend du jour, with Google, Meta, and smaller players like Snap vying for dominance. While Meta released an AI language model called LLaMA earlier this year, it has yet to debut anything resembling ChatGPT in a way that is widely accessible.
Despite Meta's pivot to AI, the company remains committed to the metaverse, according to Zuckerberg. He said that the narrative that Meta is moving away from the metaverse is not accurate, as evidenced by the planned debut of the next Quest VR headset later this year. However, Meta's Reality Labs division reported a net loss of $4 billion last quarter, and the company said it expects operating losses to increase year over year in 2023.
Meta's introduction of AI agents to its apps could potentially revolutionize the way regular users, creators, and businesses engage with the platform. Although Zuckerberg did not provide a detailed preview of how the company plans to integrate generative AI into its apps, the upcoming release of generative AI products in the coming months signals a shift towards this technology. As the competition for dominance in generative AI heats up, it remains to be seen how Meta will fare against its rivals.
